The Nonbinarian Book Bike (@nonbinarianbike) is a trans+ led mobile mutual aid initiative distributing free LGBTQIA2S+ books for all ages throughout Brooklyn.
Founded in October 2022, The Nonbinarian Book Bike was formed to provide access to and promote representation of queer stories for all ages, directly bringing LGBTQIA2S+ books to the folks that need them most.
People are able to purchase books from our Bookshop.org wishlist or send/drop off books they'd like to donate! We accept books for all ages, all genres, in all languages. We only accept queer books in new, like new, or good condition.
Every single book & monetary donation, as well as the time, labor, skills, & knowledge of countless individuals, who comprise our collective has been offered as a gesture of solidarity from book industry professionals, folks in the queer community, & allies. Together, we take care of us.
Volunteering for the book bike: Folks are able to volunteer as cyclists or book ambassadors of the book bike during any of our outings! We are currently on our seasonal hiatus, but once the bike is back on the road, we'll make an announcement of future events & a call for volunteers.
Volunteering for the storefront: We'll be moving into our holiday pop-up shop this fall, in which folks can help us load in boxes, sort books, install shelves, donate furniture pieces for displays, design our window text, & likely more things we haven't even thought of yet! If you have a particular interest or skill you'd be willing to offer to help us open sooner, please email us or DM us on Instagram.
We will continue operating the Book Bike as before, getting on the road in seasonally appropriate weather to distribute free LGBTQIA2S+ books for all ages to book deserts throughout Brooklyn.
With the bike at the bookstore, folks will be able to visit the Book Bike and get free queer books year-round.
Donating is the most direct way to help us reach our goal, but spreading the word helps more people hear about the project. Sending our Kickstarter directly to people you know is the surest way to get eyes on our campaign, & all shares to different platforms are helpful!
We plan to use our Kickstarter campaign as seed money to run a holiday pop-up storefront for Q4 of 2024 while we scout a permanent location in Brooklyn, NY, ideally in the range of neighborhoods the Book Bike has previously visited.
Once we secure our permanent brick-and-mortar location, pending build-out, we aim to open by Pride Month (June) 2025. While that is the *dream* scenario, we also want to ensure that our long-term space meets the needs of our community, so the accessibility of the store takes precedence over a hard launch.
During the duration of our holiday pop-up storefront, K., the founder of The Nonbinarian, will be the sole proprietor, with support from community volunteers.
Once we officially open our permanent brick-and-mortar, The Nonbinarian Bookstore will be a worker-owner co-op! Many of the volunteers who've invested in the Book Bike the past two years will be our founding worker-owners.
Yes! The team behind The Nonbinarian is comprised of career booksellers, many of whom each have over a decade’s worth of experience, collectively making us more prepared to make this huge leap than most new stores.
